It's been nearly 30 years since the legendary actress Nayyar Sultana passed away, but she still lives on in the hearts of her fans. As a versatile actress, she embodied the essence of acting in 255 films through her beauty, simplicity, and innocence. Originally from Aligarh, United India, Nayyar Sultana was born in 1935.
With help
from director Anwar Kamal Pasha, she began her film career with the 1955 film
"Killer" after moving to Karachi and then Lahore. Although she had a
real name, Tayyaba, she began her film career under his filmi name Nazli in the
film "Killer".
But after
her second movie, "Intikhab," she changed her name to Nayyar Sultana
and this was the name that remained with her throughout life. The energetic performances of Nayyar
Sultana in various roles instead of traditional movie roles captured the
attention of the audience.
More than
225 movies were produced during her 37-year acting career, including 140 in
Urdu and 49 in Punjabi. Her
other films include six in Pashto and one in Sindhi.
She has been
in several popular films, such as Admi, Sat Lakh, Sohaili, Anso, Devdas, Baji,
Saza, Ghonghat, Suraya, Mother's Tears, Behesht, Pehchan, Olad, and Ek Gina and
Sahi.
One of the
most successful marriages in Pakistani film history occurred when she married
actor Darpan during the height of her film career. They were the country's youngest
married couple.
Queen of
emotions' is a title that rightfully belongs to Nayyar Sultana. She first gained fame as a heroine in
films like Baji, Sohaili, and Ghonghat, but then went on to prove herself as a
character actress, earning the title Queen of Emotions.
Nayyar Sultana Family
As the daughter of a Muslim family in Aligarh in British India, Nayyar Sultana was born in 1937. Her real name was Tayyaba Bano. She studied at the Women's College in Aligarh, British India. After Pakistan gained independence in 1947, her family moved to Karachi.
Darpan, one of the most
prominent romantic leads in Pakistani cinema, was her co-star and husband.
Darpan's two brothers were also
active in showbiz. Santhosh
Kumar, the elder brother, was also an actor, and his brother S. Suleiman worked
as a film director.
Nayyar Sultana Awards
- Her best supporting role in 1957's Saat Lakh won her the Nigar Award for Best Supporting Actress.
- The Nigar Award was given to her for her performance in Saheli (1960).
- Her role in the 1962 film Aulad won her a Nigar Award for Best Actress.
- Her role in the film Behisht (1974) earned her the Nigar Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Nayyar Sultana death
Nayyar
Sultana was suffering from a fatal disease cancer in 1992. She was admitted to
Agha Khan Hospital Karachi where she lost her life on 27th October 1992. Although she is no
longer with us, Yet her fans still cherish her in the hearts of her fans.
Nayyar Sultana Filmi Career
As a
supporting actress, she debuted in 1955 with Anwar Kamal Pasha's film Qatil.
She also starred in Humayon
Mirza's 1955 film Intikhab. Her screen name then changed to Nayyar Sultana when she started playing
lead roles.
The films
she is most known for include Saat Lakh (1957), Baaji (1963), Mazloom (1959),
and Saheli (1960). Her
marriage to Darpan caused her to briefly leave the industry.
During the
1970s, she acted in a movie abi tu men jawan hun. Later acted in two movies Mazi
Haal Mustaqbil and Seeta Maryam Margaret.
In 1981,
after her husband Darpan passed away, Nayyar managed the recruiting agency. Her
career continued in the following decade with some acting roles. During her 37-year career, Nayyar
Sultana appeared in more than 225 films and received numerous awards.
As well as
being known as the queen of emotions, she was known for playing tragic roles.
Darpan and Nayyar
While
filming Baji, Darpan became attracted to Nayyar's simple looks and shy nature,
and they married after a yearlong romance. Darpan's younger brother S. Suleiman directed the film, which
calls his wife baji. Five months after they were married on Dec 1 of the
previous year, the film was released on May 3, 1963.
The late
'60s saw Nayyar Sultana return to film after she quit acting, but she appeared
as a supporting character until her passing in 1992. Nayyar Sultana was similar
to Sabiha in that she took a break from acting initially, but when Darpan was
no longer cast as the lead, she returned. Darpan died in 1980 at 51 years of age.
